Falling in Love With Reading Again after Brain Injury

I have always loved reading, however, much like everything in life I have cycled through periods of reading heavily and lightly. After my severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) I didn’t know if I would be able to read a lot. Thankfully, I can and do. I will explain in this post just how I have fallen in love with reading again and how deep that love goes (and what I’m reading).

This #TBIthursday became a Monday post and almost merged into the next #TBIthursday! Oops. Like my friend the white rabbit says in Alice in Wonderland “I’m late for a very important date.”

As a kid I always had my nose in a book. Fishing trips with my (good natured and understanding) Grandpa resulted in me basically feeding the fish the worms on my hook as I distractedly read a book. Then I went through third grade and fell behind in reading because of vision problems that were eventually corrected with surgery. I caught up with help through a reading program in school and became a voracious reader. I loved how you could leave your world and inhabit a fictional world. I would feel like I was completely disoriented when I had to leave a fictional world I loved to enter back into my own life (it was like that disorienting feeling you get when you go back outside after seeing an afternoon matinee at a movie theater)! Well, because of surviving working and attending graduate school (at the same time) and having migraines, my reading became less voracious and less for fun. Since my TBI I thankfully have found I love reading again. I realized that I was back to my old love of reading when I had that rude awakening/ daytime movie feeling when I had to stop reading a book I was loving to eat a meal! I won’t give a review of the book since that will come next week in my book review post (the book was “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett). I just wanted to say how happy I was to realize my reading love is back! I think 10 year old Laura feeding the fish her worms while she focused on her book would be really happy (and I bet my Grandpa is smiling as he looks down from heaven).

Note: I wanted to write more on this topic, but I will later. To read more about me as a reader through the years check out this post.

A Selby Sweetie Conclusion

We have this floating mat at our lake cabin and my Mom was throwing dog treats on it to get Selby to go out on it. Well, I looked up and she had “gotten stuck” on it as it floated out a little deeper (but not very deep because you can see the bottom of the lake in this picture)! I “rescued” her but did make her swim!

  2. I read so much in high school, my grades suffered as a result. Regardless of all my ‘practice’ I was still classified as a poor reader and enrolled in reading special ed. I find it remarkable that I was tagged as one of the 20 worst readers in my fairly large school. I think they were just making me read the wrong stuff.
